In 1978, Marie Chouinard presented her first dance work, Cristallisation, establishing her reputation as a highly original artist driven by the need for authentic communication. In 1990, she founded COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD, which has since then performed over 1000 times on all the great stages of the world and participated in the most prestigious international festivals. Many of its masterpieces, including The Rite of Spring (1993), are still presented today. Its 24 Preludes by Chopin (1999), Prelude to The Afternoon of a Faun (1994) and bODY_rEMIX / les_vARIATIONS_gOLDBERG - Act 1 (2005) are performed by renowned dance companies.
In addition to choreography, Chouinard’s work also includes multimedia creations (Cantique No. 3, created with Louis Dufort, and Icônes, created with Luc Courchesne), as well as books (Chantier des extases and the collective COMPAGNIE_MARIE_CHOUINARD_COMPANY) and a film (bODY_rEMIX / gOLDBERG_vARIATIONS, based on the eponymous choreography).
Always visually compelling, her work reflects her deepest concerns; dance is to be approached as a sacred art and virtuoso performance; each new work must invent and explore a whole new universe.
