was The Göteborg Opera's Artistic Director - Opera from 1996 to 2005. His first production as conductor at The Göteborg Opera was David Radok's production of Rossini's Il viaggio a Reims (The Journey to Reims). From 1969, he was made conductor at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm, later having the title of Director of the Royal Swedish Court Orchestra. In 1993, he was appointed professor of conducting at the University of Stockholm School of Music and was then elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
In 2006, Kjell Ingebretsen became Professor of Opera at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and was awarded the specialist magazine Tidskriften Opera's Prize during that same year. Since 1 July 2009, he has been artistic director for the Master's Degree in Orchestral Performance at the University of Gothenburg Academy of Music and Drama. In 2004, Kjell Ingebretsen was awarded the prestigious Litteris et Artibus Medal by the King of Sweden, a medal which is awarded for outstanding artistic endeavour, primarily within the fields of music, dramatic performance and literature. In 2006, he was awarded the Medal of St Olaf by the King of Norway for promoting artistic collaboration between Sweden and Norway. In the same year, he was awarded the Tidskriften Opera's Prize. Since 2007, Kjell Ingebretsen has been moderator of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Gothenburg in 2009.
