Katarina Karnéus

Katarina Karnéus, mezzo-soprano, has been engaged by The Göteborg Opera for a five-year period starting with the 2012-2013 season. She has appeared on the world's greatest opera stages and concert platforms. She was born in Stockholm and studied at Trinity College of Music and the National Opera Studio in London. In 1995 she won the Cardiff Singer of the World competition. Among her many roles have been her debut at the Metropolitan in New York in 1999 as Varvara in Katja Kabanova. At the Met she went on to sing Olga in Eugene Onegin, Siebel in Faust and Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Other roles have included Annio in La Clemeza di Tito (at Covent Garden and the Bavarian State Opera), Countess Geschwitz in Lulu (at the Bavarian State Opera), the title role in Carmen (at the Opéra Comique), the title role in Alceste (at the Brussels Opera), Elisabetta in Maria Stuarda (at the Staatsoper unter den Linden) and Orpheus in Orfeo ed Euridice (at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin), and she has had frequent invitations to the Glyndebourne Festival. Karnéus made her Swedish debut at The Göteborg Opera in 2002 as Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier (directed by Yannis Houvardas), for which she was awarded Opera magazine's opera prize. She returned to The Göteborg Opera in 2011 to sing Ruggerio in Alcina. Her debut at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm came in 2009 in the title role in Handel's Xerxes. She has also appeared at the Salzburg Festival and the Edinburgh Festival and at Buckingham Palace, and has been a soloist with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. She has given many recitals at the Wigmore Hall in London, the Lincoln Centre in New York and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Karnéus has recorded songs by Mahler, Strauss, Ravel, Grieg and Sibelius, among others. In 2010 she won a Grammy for Mahler's 8th Symphony with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra under Michael Tilson Thomas, and in 2011 she made a Mahler CD with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. On the DVD of Tristan und Isolde from Glyndebourne, she sings Brangäne with Nina Stemme as Isolde. Her most recent engagements have included a revival of Ariane et Barbe-Bleu at the Frankfurt Opera, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni at Covent Garden in London and Fricka in Das Rheingold at the Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona, as well as a number of concerts.
