Hiroaki Umeda

Hiroaki Umeda was born 1977 and works internationally as a choreographer, dancer and sound/light/image/video designer. Born in Japan and resident in Tokyo, he is in vibrant contact with current Japanese cultural life, has studied photography at Nihon University and has forged his own style as a dancer, influenced by high-tech, visual art, art-dance and hip-hop. In the year 2000, he formed S20, his own dance company, and with his very first work created expectations in international circles when it was shown at the Rencontres Chorégraphiques Internationales festival in Paris.

The titles of his early works include Ni (2001), while going to a condition (2002), Looming (2003) and Finore (2003), which has been presented at festivals such as the Japan Dance Festival (Korea), Yokohama Dance Collection (Japan), Uovo e Contemporanea (Italy), FIND Festival (Canada). In 2007, the piece called Accumulated Layout was staged at Théâtre National de Chaillot, Paris. In addition, Umeda has been invited to TorinoDanza, Culturgeist in Lisbon, Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels, La Biennale de Danse de Lyon, RomaEuropa and Festival d’Automne in Paris 2008. During that same year, he also began choreographing other dancers.
