Henrik Schaefer is the new Music Director of The Göteborg Opera from the 1st of January 2014.
At the age of 22 Henrik Schaefer joined the Berlin Philharmonic as a viola player; the then youngest member of the orchestra. At the same time he studied conducting at the Musikhochschule Leipzig. In the year 2000 he was chosen by Claudio Abbado as his assistant and got numerous opportunities to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic. Tristan in Tokyo, Parsifal in Salzburg and Mahler's 7th symphony in Vienna were among the experiences of this time.
His own conducting career began with a ballet production of The Rite of Spring with the Leipzig Ballet and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig (Medici Arts DVD 2055728 via Naxos). Since then he has become a sought-after Wagner conductor, but he has also all the great Mozart operas and the romantic Italian and French operas in his repertoire. He appeared as guest conductor at the operas in Leipzig, Rouen, Chemnitz, Seoul, at the Opera Hedeland, the Norrlands Opera, the Hongkong Opera and The Göteborg Opera.
In 2007 he was chosen as Chief Conductor for the Wermland Opera in Sweden after a production of Parsifal. Here he earned international acclaim with five entire Ring Cycles performed within three months - all four operas in the cycle premiered in the same week!
His opera repertoire includes Die Zauberflöte, Don Giovanni, Le Nozze di Figaro, Cosí fan Tutte, Eugen Onegin, Faust, La Traviata, La Bohème, Falstaff, Les dialogues des Carmelites, Hänsel und Gretel, Der fliegende Holländer, Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, Götterdämmerung, Tristan und Isolde and Parsifal.
As a concert conductor he is a worldwide well received guest with the Tokyo Symphony, Gävle Symphony, Osaka Philharmonic, Helsingborg Symphony, Holland Symfonia, Norrköping Symphonie Orchester, Sapporo Symphony, Brabants Orkest, Sendai Philharmonic, Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, Tokyo Metropolitan, the Swedish and Dutch Radio Orchestras, New Japan Philharmonic, Nederlands Philharmonic, Hongkong Philharmonic and the orchestras in Nürnberg, Aalborg, Antwerpen, Enschede, Aarhus, Tromsö and Madrid.
In addition to the DVD with the Gewandhausorchestra he has recorded numerous CDs and made lots of Radio recordings with the Dutch Radio Symphony, the Radio Chamber Orchestra and the orchestras in Göteborg and Karlstad.
