Håkan Mayer is a trained dancer and was employed for 10 years at the Royal Opera in Stockholm.

In 1986 he began freelancing together with Kenneth Kvarnström, Per Jonsson, Susanne Jaresand and Birgit Cullberg, a commitment which led to a series of European tours. Description of a Struggle, La Traviata, Macbeth, Julius Caesar and The Rake's Progress, all at the Göteborg Opera. He has also worked with Radok on The Magic Flute and Description of a struggle (the play) in Prague, The Barber of Seville in Aix-en-Provence and La Traviata and The Rake's Progress at the Royal Danish Theatre. Other operas at the Göteborg Opera for which he created the choreography include The Marriage of Figaro, Eugene Onegin, Goya and Orpheus and Eurydice. Håkan Mayer has also worked on musical, opera and theatre productions at the Stockholm City Theatre, the Wermland Opera and NorrlandsOperan. He is now dance development officer for Region Värmland.
