Giancarlo Andretta was the Principal Guest Conductor at The Göteborg Opera between 2010 and 2013. He makes regular appearances as guest conductor in concert halls and opera houses all over Europe, including Venice, Rome, Naples, Parma, Vienna, Berlin, Amsterdam, Prague, Munich, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, Lisbon, Dublin and Athens.
After studying in Venice and Vienna, Andretta began his career in 1988 as solo répétiteur and principal coach at the Vienna State Opera and the Salzburg Festival, where he stayed until 1993. He was also assistant conductor for several international opera productions and record companies.
From 1994-1997 he was first guest conductor and consultant at the Graz Opera, which he left to take up a post as chief conductor of the Orchestra Filharmonia Veneta and artistic director of the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, Italy (1996-2003). Since 2003 he has been chief conductor of the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra. In 2005, Andretta was appointed professor of conducting at the Royal Danish Academy of Music.
He has recorded with the Fenice Opera Orchestra in Venice, the Vienna and Munich Radio Orchestras, the Basel Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto. His most recent engagements have included La Traviata, Il Turco in Italia and Lucia di Lammerrmoor at the Copenhagen Opera.
At The Göteborg Opera, Giancarlo Andretta has previously conducted Rossini's La Cenerentola, Verdi's Macbeth, Rossini's L'Italiana in Algeri (concertante), Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, Verdi's Attila (concertante), Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia, Simon Boccanegra here in Gothenburg, Il Trovatore at the Concertgebaw in Amsterdam, La Cenerentola at the Zurich Opera House and I Puritani in Copenhagen.
