Etienne Pluss was born in Switzerland in 1971. Between 1989-1993, he started and managed an art gallery in Genf, after which he went on to study scenography with Achim Freyer at Hochschule der Künste Berlin. Following his studies, he started working as an assistant set and costume designer at Burgtheater in Vienna and at the Berliner Ensemble. Since 2000, he has worked with independent set design assignments, with directors such as George Tabori, Patrick Schlösser, Philip Tiedemann, Enrico Lübbe, Joel Lauwers and Peter Hailer. The way forward went from Berlin and the assignments at Staatopera Unter den Linden, Berliner Ensemble, Zeitgenössische Oper Berlin, to Vienna and Burgtheater, Akademie Theater, Theater in der Josefstadt and Volkstheater as well as spoken theatre stages in Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Kassel, Oslo and opera houses in Basel, Hannover, Berlin and Prag, among others. Etienne Pluss has received a number of honourable mentions and nominations for best set design, including in the major magazine Theater Heute (1999, 2000, 2001, 2013). Pluss is also frequently engaged by several fashion houses for set design for fashion shows in Milan and Berlin.
