Alexander Sprague, tenor, studied at the Royal Academy of Music and the National Opera Studio. He won the Michael Oliver Prize at the 2012 International Handel Singing Competition.
To date his operatic engagements have included Lyngstrand in Craig Armstrong’s The Lady from the Sea at the Edinburgh Festival, Leonard in The Yeoman of the Guard with the Philharmonia Orchestra under John Wilson at the Royal Festival Hall, Pliable and Superstition in Vaughan Williams’s The Pilgrim’s Progress at English National Opera, Eurimedes in Telemann’s Orpheus with the Classical Opera Company, Machbeath in Britten’s arrangement of John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic under Richard Farnes, the title role of Albert Herring for Opera North and Ywain Gawain at the Salzburg Festival. Plans include Pastore in Monteverdi’s Orfeo at the Opéra National de Lorraine, A Young Man (Moses und Aron) with Welsh National Opera and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. Among the conductors with whom he has worked are Colin Davis, John Eliot Gardiner, Charles Mackerras, Jane Glover and Laurence Cummings.
