Intuition, spirituality, science and a world-view undergoing change. GöteborgsOperans Danskompani is joining with some of the foremost choreographers of our times in examining our consciousness and its possibilities.

GöteborgsOperans Danskompani continues the dialogue with the movements in today's society. In the 2013/2014 season, the company is taking a step out into the unknown. Through its artistic work the dance company explores new spiritual and scientific horizons.

What is there beyond science and beliefs? Mankind's search for something greater than itself is universal. Faith and science have been the foundation of our values, in all eras and in all cultures. New observations and discoveries have repeatedly revolutionised the world-view of contemporary society. Maybe we have still only scraped the surface as regards the understanding of our existence. As yet, we have not understood the greatest mystery of all – our consciousness.

"I think, therefore I am." Those words belong to René Descartes, 17th century philosopher and scientist. He saw the human being as comprising two distinct parts: the body, which cannot think, and the mind, which can. Three hundred years later, Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis expanded our understanding of ourselves by emphasizing the subconscious.

What are we kicking at when we kick at a stone? Not much. In very simple words, science requires remarkably few ingredients to put a stone together: a handful of particles, a force that guides their interaction and a few rules of quantum mechanics. But – is reality then just what we can experience with our five senses? The things we can see, smell, feel, hear and taste? And can we rely on our senses?

Reality is more complex, refined and mysterious than traditional science has been able to show. Throughout the world, there is a growing interest in the existence of something beyond science and religions. In mankind's attempts to understand, the circles being searched become increasingly wide, inside and outside. What if we could change the projected images of our realities through our consciousness? How are we related to energies that surround us and in which sense are we all connected to each other? Consciousness matters! The relation between the physical and non-physical world is more complex than we allowed ourselves to imagine. It’s time to raise new questions …

GöteborgsOperans Danskompani brings together choreographers and artists from a broad spectrum, to form new, creative means of expression. The dance company takes aesthetic and physical risks to break barriers – between stage and audience, between dance and other forms of art, between art and life. Our goal is to further hone the contours and to present an unparalleled dance company to the world.

This season, you will be able to encounter more art forms than ever before on (and off) our stages. Contemporary dance is interwoven with visual art, architecture, music, drama and more. This results in pulsating, interesting – international art for an inquisitive audience, regardless of age.

From this season's general thread, the choreographers and artists are weaving new creations. The first dance première of the season crosses all latitudes in a meeting between two new talents. Richard Siegal gets his audience involved, asking the question: Who really is the artist? Multi artist Hiroaki Umeda emphasises visual art by having his movements embedded in a frame of living art. In spring, we will be welcoming two masters from different generations. Avantgarde artist Saburo Teshigawara and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, both come with high international reputation and won many prizes for their artworks – will each create a new work for GöteborgsOperans Danskompani.

The artists who create for GöteborgsOperans Danskompani explore the horizon. Mind and spirit, body and soul are interwoven and inspire to new discoveries. We remain cutting edge, highly visible, accessible and embracing for all our audiences.

Welcome to the 2013/2014 dance season – keep your eyes, your mind and your heart open!
