Rebel Marie Chouinard is an icon within modern choreography. An astounding multi-faceted artist who is fascinated by the poetics of the body. As a choreographer she has won numerous awards and is in demand internationally. The Rite of Spring and bODY_rEMIX/gOLDBERG_vARIATIONS are her best known works.
In the renowned bODY_rEMIX/gOLDBERG_vARIATIONS act 1 she gives the dancers pointe shoes and crutches, aids which both fetter and free them. The beauty of dance meets its discipline and its demand for submission
In spring 2013 it will be 100 years since Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring had its world premiere in Paris and created a scandal. Chouinard's avant-garde choreography for this ground-breaking music is regarded as being her masterpiece. In her hymn to life, the dancers are transformed into animals in a symbiotic relationship with Stravinsky's music. The Göteborg Opera Orchestra takes on this work with all its might under the leadership of Henrik Schaefer.
To Marie Chouinard the dancer's body is just as much a part of the movement as the movement itself; the skin, the spine, the sweat – everything is part of the artwork. "Covering the body is like putting a screen in front of a painting", she says.
