Rebel Marie Chouinard is an icon within modern choreography. An astounding multi-faceted artist who is fascinated by the poetics of the body. As a choreographer she has won numerous awards and is in demand internationally. The Rite of Spring is one of her best known works.
This spring 2013 it was 100 years since Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring had its world premiere in Paris and created a scandal. Chouinard's avant-garde choreography for this ground-breaking music is regarded as being her masterpiece. In her hymn to life, the dancers are transformed into animals in a symbiotic relationship with Stravinsky's music.
To Marie Chouinard the dancer's body is just as much a part of the movement as the movement itself; the skin, the spine, the sweat – everything is part of the artwork. "Covering the body is like putting a curtain in front of a painting", she says.
