The premiere will be recorded by Swedish Radio P2 and broadcast on 27 May.

In Peking Princess Turandot’s father has decided that it is time to find a prince for his his daughter to marry. There are many suitors, but one by one they are rejected and fall victim to the fearsome process of selection devised by Turandot. Each suitor must solve three riddles. If he answers correctly he will gain Turandot’s hand in marriage. If his answers are wrong he is executed. The Princess does not wish to marry so she has made the riddles almost impossible.

When Prince Calaf arrives in Peking, all previous suitors have failed to solve Turandot’s riddles. He falls instantly in love with her and decides that he too will take his chance…

”Turandot” is one of the world’s best-loved operas. It was Giacomo Puccini’s last. He was unable to complete the opera before his death, so the final part was written by Franco Alfano (following Puccini’s draft score). Many famous opera singers have performed the role of Turandot, not the least being Birgit Nilsson. Turid Karlsen takes the role of Turandot at the Göteborg Opera.
