Tristan und Isolde
‘Each bar of dramatic music is justified only when expressing something in the plot or in the character’s personality.’
Richard Wagner took no shortcuts. He was a man of firm (and inconvenient) views on everything from music to politics. Then again, the result of this creativity was something out of the ordinary. From the very first bars, the music takes hold of you, creating a magical, enchanted and unreal feeling. Wagner transfers us to another time, another world, even before the curtain goes up.
Tristan’s ship is waiting to set sail for Cornwall, the Irish princess Isolde on board. Soon Wagner will get things rolling, a story fuelled by people’s wills, duties, promises and misunderstandings. Or Destiny, if you like. And soon Tristan and Isolde, who should be separated by hatred and vindictiveness, will realise that they are united by love, that they love one another more than life itself.
