By Nicolo Fonte and Jirí Kylián.
Today it is almost impossible to discuss the music of the 1900s without mentioning Igor Stravinsky and his best-known work, The Rite of Spring. But at the time of its premiere the critics dipped their pens in poisoned ink. The audience was completely shocked. Today The Rite of Spring is considered a masterpiece. A classic. With the music as a foundation, Nicolo Fonte has created a modern and very dramatic ballet for the Goteborg Ballet - The Waiting - which ticks away like a clock and takes as its theme the choreographer’s interpretation of our current perception of just that phenomenon – time. Violin Concerto is the second of Nicolo Fonte’s Swedish ballet premieres. Powerful and vivid with emotional overtones, danced to the music of Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto. Falling Angels, with choreography and sets by Jirí Kylián. The music for four percussionists, Drumming, is composed by Steve Reich– the performance pulsates with the sound of drums and powerful, lively rhythms. The Göteborg Opera Orchestra is conducted by Michael Güttler. Ballet is at its best when it is experienced through one’s sense of hearing.
