Pique Dame
Tchaikovsky’s opera PIQUE DAME, based on Pushkin's short story, takes place in late
18th century Russia. The military officer Hermann is in love with Lisa, and is also obsessed with learning the secret of the “magical three cards”, which is only known by Lisa’s guardian, an elderly Countess. In trying to find out the secret, he kills the countess. Lisa realizes that Hermann is obsessed with the cards and that she has no place with him anymore; she drowns herself in despair. Hermann learns the secret of the cards from the Countess’ ghost – three, seven and ace – and tries to win the card game. He loses and kills himself.
