One of the best Verdi productions I have experienced
— Göteborgs-Posten

During Spring 2015, The Göteborg Opera will take Verdi’s Rigoletto on the road in a tent tour of seven towns in the Västra Götaland region. While the opera tent is raised there will also be other events in the tent, such as concerts with local artists. The tent tour is being made in collaboration with councils and other entrepreneurs at the towns it is to visit, and is an important part of our work to increase interest for opera, and to reach out to a wider audience.

Introduction to this production, with the director Rikard Bergqvist and dramaturgist Göran Gademan (in Swedish)

The tragic history of the unhappy court jester who tries to protect his daughter from the evils of the world, and in particular from the notorious lothario The Duke of Mantua, will be retold again in an updated way.

The director Rikard Bergqvist describes it like this:

Rigoletto is a factotum at a high-class but dodgy gym. His boss, who is a sex-addicted financier and politician, starts a dangerous relationship with Rigoletto's daughter Gilda – and thus the servant is transformed into a revenge-seeker…

The Göteborg Opera’s Rigoletto is Verdi’s opera in a new format: with two musicians, a ”chorus” made up of three and some of our absolute best soloists. In the opera tent you’ll really be in the thick of it. Expect entertainment, twisted social critique, and strong passion, all sung in Swedish but with Italian energy!

One of the house’s soloists Mats Persson will be playing the title role, who after a string of great roles such as Macbeth, Amfortas in Parsifal and Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, now meets the challenge of this complex, multi-faceted role. The duke will be played by out ”italian” tenor Tomas Lind while the innocent Gilda will be played by the young star Sofie Asplund.
