Pelléas et Mélisande
We continue with the impressionistic theme from the autum’s ballet production Impressionism.
Claude Debussy, like Mozart, is known for only one opera, Pelléas et Mélisande. The opera is frequently played on the international opera scenes, but this is the first time it is staged in Gothenburg. This beautiful production, with its austere, stylised form, was highly acclaimed
at its premiere in Leipzig in 2001. This is the renowned John Dew’s first production in Northern Europe.
The opera is based on a fairy play by the Belgian Nobel Prize winner Maurice Maeterlinck, about the young girl Mélisande, who is found by Prince Golaud and marries him. She is very unhappy, and when she later meets Golaud’s half brother Pelléas she falls in love with him.
Libretto is based on Maeterlinck's drama.
