The Nutcracker

The Nutcracker

At the world première of the full length ballet Anima at the Göteborg Opera, Pär Isberg was awarded the 1999 Birgit Cullberg stipend. One of the elements cited as the basis for the jury's decision was Isberg's version of The Nutcracker which, ever since it first saw the light of day, has become somewhat of a national art treasure. There is something in it for the whole family - a fantastic blend of classical ballet and beloved Elsa Bescow tales.

On Christmas Eve anything can (and does) happen. Rats and snowdrop princesses dance on pointed toes. Gingerbread figures and candy canes romp joyfully about. A carnival of Christmas crackers pops up from nowhere as do a Christmas goat and a real live poodle. Is this all a dream or are Peter and Lotta really awake?
