Macbeth

Shakespeare’s fateful drama, ”Macbeth”, is now over 400 years old; the more superstitious avoiding using that bloodstained name, and preferring to call it ”The Scottish Play.” The Witches tell Macbeth that one day he will rise to become King of Scotland. Under the strong influence of his power-crazed wife he casts aside all the obstacles placed in his path. Finally, he murders the King, Duncan. The blame is placed on Duncan’s servants, and Macbeth ascends to the throne.

Macbeth is a study in how unchecked desire for power corrodes all human and ethical behaviour. Morals and empathy must be cast aside when power becomes the meaning of existence.

This has been the starting point for David Radok and his production team when creating their version of Macbeth, the darkest of Shakespeare’s and Verdi’s works, Mats Persson sings his first Macbeth, and in the dramatic role of Lady Macbeth, Francesca Patanè makes her debut guest performance at The Göteborg Opera.
