A Swedish opera based on a play by August Strindberg. Elisabet Strid will sing the title role in Rangström’s Kronbruden (The Crown Bride), part of the season’s concert series of important but rarely performed Swedish operas.

Even while August Strindberg was writing his play in 1901, it seemed to be crying out to be set to music. Twenty years later, composer Ture Rangström came to the rescue and created an opera based on the play.  The result became one of the most regularly performed and popular Swedish operas.

Combining folklore with impressionism and symbolism, the drama is about the proud Kersti, who drowns her new-born baby in order to be crown bride and marry her beloved Mats. But both her conscience and social pressure catch up with her. The scene in which the dead child appears to Kersti to the piercing tones of the orchestra’s celesta cannot fail to move.

The lead role will be sung by Elisabet Strid, who has pursued a high-profile international career since performing our Rusalka in Dvořák’s opera in 2012. Kronbruden will be conducted by David Björkman.
