Falstaff 2005
After having staged six of Giuseppe Verdi’s dramatic works, it is with great pleasure that the Göteborg Opera presents his comic opera, Falstaff, for the first time.
”A musical cascade, a cascading performance – this production exudes a clear and unmistakeably British exuberance”. SR Kulturnytt
”A production that more than well deserves to play to a full house every evening”. Hallands Nyheter
In staging the opera Falstaff the Göteborg Opera would like to thank three people. Firstly of course, Giuseppe Verdi who wrote the opera in 1893. Secondly, Shakespeare who, nearly 300 years earlier, wrote the plays on which the opera is based (The Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry IV). And finally, Adrian Noble, the former Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, who is responsible for this Göteborg Opera production.
The opera’s central figure is Sir John Falstaff, a thoroughly self-righteous character, who makes the mistake of sending love letters to two women at the same time. The two women soon realise what he is up to and decide to teach him a lesson. Together Shakespeare, Verdi and Noble have created a comic opera with scenes bursting with life, fantastic costumes and – for once – a happy ending! Falstaff you just have to see.
”The conductor, Anthony Bramall, leads a thoroughly vocally accomplished ensemble through Verdi’s intricate musical web.” SvD
”The orchestra lives up to its reputation as Sweden’s best opera orchestra.” Borås Tidning
