An unexpected visit and suddenly the flame of love is set alight in the heart of the young Tatyana. However, this youthful, irrepressible love comes into collision with the social conventions of Russia in the 1800s. Tatyana’s declaration of love for Onegin is dismissed with a stern reproach. She should know better. And so the years pass. Tatyana marries a very wealthy man and blossoms into a sophisticated and much admired beauty. When Onegin’s path once again crosses that of Tatyana, it is his turn to feel the burning, all-consuming fire of love.
Tchaikovsky’s Eugen Onegin holds a place apart in Russian opera. The story of the young country girl, Tatyana (Annalena Persson), who falls so deeply in love with the worldly dandy, Eugen Onegin, has moved Göteborg audiences over many years. And now for the first time the story comes to Göteborg Opera. The Czech opera director, Jakub Korcák, has a debut as guest director at Göteborg Opera. His production will be characterised by a psychological realism with Tatyana as the central figure.
The composer and music critic, Wilhelm Peterson-Berger’s, short and succinct summary of the plot is: ”First she will but not him, then he will but not her".
