Opera. Richard Strauss would have been 150 years old in 2014. We're celebrating by performing his opera Daphne for the first time ever in Sweden.

This mythological opera is not one of his most frequently performed operas, but in recent years it has had something of a resurgence in the world's opera houses. Daphne is the tale of a nymph who avoids the god Apollo's hot-blooded advances by metamorphosing into a bay tree. Strauss has his opera end on a matchlessly magical and orchestral shimmering way when Daphne grows into the sighing foliage – metamorphoses of various kinds are themes that are particular favourites of his.

The title role is performed by internationally celebrated soprano Agneta Eichenholz, who recently had a major success in our opera house as Handel's Alcina. Apollo is sung by Stefan Vinke, and the house's very own Tomas Lind sings the part of his rival and Daphne's first love Leukippos. The orchestra is given a major, demanding task under the direction of Henrik Schaefer.
