Damien Jalet & Icon

Dance program by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet

Icons, live music and 3.5 tonnes of clay

Cult figures, authority figures, religious leaders. We create our icons, grant them power, worship them. Until the next regime or culture sweeps in with its own icons, leaving our former idols to be swiftly forgotten. What happens to us and our society as we build our icons – and demolish them?

Just as for Noetic (2014), Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui has chosen for Icon to collaborate with the world-renowned sculptor Antony Gormley, who accounts for the scenography: 3.5 tonnes of clay. To specially commissioned music, performed on stage by musicians and singers from Italy, Japan and Korea, the dancers interact with the clay in sophisticated, almost ritual patterns. A powerful and wonderful experience.

Icon had its world premiere at the Göteborg Opera in the autumn 2016 and is a co-production between GöteborgsOperans Danskompani and Eastman. Ever since its first staging in Gothenburg, Icon has gained international recognition for the dance company from around Europe.

The evening begins in the same way as for the Noetic double-bill, with the new creation of internationally renowned choreographer Damien Jalet, Skid.
