Babar

Premiär 3 februari 2011 i Orkestersalen.

Concert. Through Babar the Göteborg Opera wants to give its younger visitors the chance to get a closer look at music and musical instruments.

The story has it that French composer Francis Poulenc was playing the piano at the home of some relatives one day in the 1940s, when suddenly a little girl walked up to him and said "Oh, that doesn't sound good at all. Play this instead". She placed her book about the elephant Babar on the music stand. Poulenc improvised an accompaniment while he read the story, to the delight of the little girl. Soon the rumour spread and Poulenc had to do the same thing for all the children in the neighbourhood. When the composition "for story teller and piano (or orchestra)", L’histoire de Babar, le petit éléphant, was first published in 1945, it was dedicated to all these children.

Musicians from the Göteborg Opera, together with soloist Lars Hjertner, welcome you to an unusual educational visit to the orchestra hall. Together, they will bring Jean du Brunhoff's classic tale about Babar to life. Poulenc's music has been arranged for wind instruments by Thomas Lindahl, our resident composer this season. The translation was provided by Gallie Eng. The production, which will be performed as a matinée, is aimed at primary school children.
