When The Göteborg Opera produced its first baroque opera, Handel’s Julius Caesar, it was such a success that engaging the conductor and baroque expert Laurence Cummings for another production was a natural next step. Alcina is generally seen to be Handel’s most mature and perfect opera, in addition to being a spectacular celebration of song. The opera is centred on the beautiful sorceress Alcina, who seduces all men she sees and then transforms them into stones and trees when she tires of them. When Ruggiero ends up on her island he too falls madly in love with Alcina. His fiancée Bradamante manages to find him and uses all her deviousness to save him from the grips of the beautiful seductress.

To follow the modern production trends within baroque opera, we have chosen Yannis Houvardas as director. He last performed at The Göteborg Opera with Parsifal and The Woman Without a Shadow. With a production team consisting of Lars-Åke Thessman, Karin Erskine and Torkel Blomkvist he has chosen to produce Alcina as an intimate chamber drama.

Agneta Eichenholz, in her first opera performance at The Göteborg Opera, sings the title role. She is already well-known on the international arena after her debut as Lulu at Covent Garden in London. As her lover Ruggiero we see Katarina Karnéus, who is also famous abroad and who is loved by the Gothenburg audience since her performance as Octavian in The Knight of the Rose. Ida Falk Winland achieved Swedish fame with her performance as Cleopatra in The Göteborg Opera production of Julius Caesar and Ann-Kristin Jones was nominated for the Opera magazine’s award for her performance as Sextus in the same production. Both play a role in this production.
