A Chorus Line
The show opens on an audition in New York. Twenty-four dancers compete for eight parts in the chorus of a Broadway Show. They are scrutinized by the autocratic choreographer and director Zach, played by Rikard Wolff.
But Zach is not only looking for talent, he wants to know the dancers’ personal stories. As the audition wears on we get to take part of their innermost hopes and dreams, fears and insecurities – everything that has brought them to where they are today, to this fearsome and gruelling audition. At the end the audience wants all of the dancers to make the final cut.
At the Göteborg Opera, more than 400 people auditioned for a part in the musical.
In addition to the 17 professional dancers, the cast also includes fifty dancers from the Göteborg Ballet Academy. Everyone will sing and dance except for Zach, who in return has been given a more prominent part, something that has not been the case in other productions around the world. “With all the docusoaps on TV, it has become commonplace for people to expose themselves to prefect strangers”, says Staffan Aspegren, the director of A Chorus Line. This is why he decided to twist the story somewhat…
A Chorus Line opened for the first time in 1975, played an astonishing 6137 performances, was for a long time the most played Broadway musical (before Cats broke the record) and affected a whole generation of dancers. In addition the musical won almost every prize there is, among others a Pulitzer Price.
