Le Nozze di Figaro

Opera buffa in four acts by WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART (1756-1791) Libretto by LORENZO DA PONTE based on the play by Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais

One hot, crazy day in Spain …

In the glittering cast, among others, Thomas Oliemans, Ida Falk Winland and Anna Grevelius cunducted by Jane Glover, and Åke Zetterström, Sofie Asplund, Daniel Hellström and Ann-Kristin Jones conducted by Patrik Ringborg. Malin Hartelius is the Countess.

Wonderland / Wasteland

World premiere 20 September 2014

Welcome to the rabbit hole. Two choreographers in collaboration with GöteborgsOperans Danskompani are creating a thought provoking performance. Two creations which balance and complete one another.

In A’s Adventures he plays with inspiration from Alice/Anton in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Time and remembrance move in different directions and the chess game draws the playing board. See what is behind the looking glass from the inside of the mirror.

In Wasteland, Ina Christel Johannessen, who runs the Oslo-based company Zero Visibility Corp, takes the theme further. In an incredibly beautiful abandoned industrial location, dancers interact with both music and set. An award winning documentary about people living and creating beautiful worlds out of rubbish on a dump site in Brazil sets the inspiration for this piece. The Belgian group Stray Dogs will perform live from their latest album Wasteland.

Kristina från Duvemåla

A musical based on the epic emigrant story by Vilhelm Moberg.

Premiere 25 October 2014

Among a small group of people from Ljuder's parish in Småland, the dream of America grows more powerful as famine, overbearing authorities and religious persecution makes it unbearable for them to remain at home. The new country has enough land for everyone and offers a haven and a future to those who have the courage to make the long and perilous journey. It welcomes people who long for the freedom they are denied at home.

Kristina from Duvemåla was the first musical staged at The Göteborg Opera (1996), and one of the most successful productions of its kind ever to have been staged at the opera house. It was first performed in Malmö in 1995.

In 2012, the Swedish Theatre in Helsinki was the first theatre outside Sweden to stage the musical. The result: a success and a box office record. Now we have the pleasure of being able to offer the Swedish audience that production.

Taking the lead roles are Maria Ylipää, Robert Noack, Birthe Wingren and Oskar Nilsson – the same quartet as in Helsinki.

Hänsel und Gretel

A fairy tale opera in two acts by ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK (1854-1921).
Libretto by ADELHEID WETTE based on the fairy story by the Brothers Grimm.
Swedish translation by Karl Sjunnesson.

Premiere 22 November 2014

The real danger of eating candy.

When Engelbert Humperdinck wrote an opera about Hansel and Gretel for his own nieces and nephews, naturally he was not aware of what an everlasting masterpiece it would turn out to be. Now, finally, it is to be staged at The Göteborg Opera. In perfect time for Christmas, it is a breathtaking experience for young and old alike.

After a significant career, Matilda Paulsson, is now going to face the Gothenburg audience as Hansel, while the role of Gretel is being shared by Elisabeth Meyer and Sofie Asplund.

Susanne Resmark guarantees that the gingerbread-baking witch is just the right kind of terrifying. German-born conductor Henrik Schaefer, Musical Director of The Göteborg Opera Orchestra, has been surrounded by this music since childhood. Director is Katharina Thoma.

With The Göteborg Opera Orchestra and Childrens Chorus. Performed in Swedish.

A Flowering Tree

Opera in two acts by JOHN ADAMS (1947-).
Libretto by John Adams and Peter Sellars

Premiere in Scandinavia 7 February 2015

“Luminous, lyrical, accessible” Chicago Tribune. A Flowering Tree is an opera full of dance, "alive with innocence and magic" (New York Times), written by one of today's most celebrated operatic composers: American John Adams.

With its sensual music, the opera tells a 2,000 year old Indian folk tale. The young Kumudha has a magical ability: she can transform herself into a tree.

Taking the role of Kumudha, Julia Sporsén is making her first appearance in Gothenburg, while American Eric Fennell is making his Swedish début in the role of the Prince. Nicola Raab is responsible for the direction – she was the director behind our internationally acclaimed Thaïs. The Story Teller is Mats Persson.

With The Göteborg Opera Chorus, The Göteborg Opera Orchestra and dancers.

Shadowland / Neverland

World Premiere 14 March 2015

In the dark and grim Shadowland, Irish choreographer Michael Keegan-Dolan takes us on a breathtaking broom flight to Blockula: witch hunts, sorcery and a fervour to wipe out the odd and unfitting. Terra incognita, the unknown land, is investigated and discovered. Inspired by Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and WB Yeats’ early poems rooted in the Irish legends, mysticism and occultism, a gut wrenching witch hunt sets the scene that makes the witch project.

In Neverland, Norwegian choreographer Alan Lucien Øyen has been inspired by Peter Pan and by Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream – Puck with parallels to Peter. A strong wish to never grow up. A play in and about reality in a dream scape.

Duke Bluebeard's Castle / Erwartung

Duke Bluebeard's Castle: An opera in one act by BÉLA BARTÓK (1881-1945).
Libretto by BÉLA BALÁZS
Erwartung: A monodrama in one act by ARNOLD SCHÖNBERG (1874-1951)

Premiär 18 april 2015

Enter at your own risk.

An evocative, frightening and challenging double-bill that delves deeply into the human psyche. The young Judith has just married the cheerless Duke Bluebeard. She wants to know everything about him. She is able to accomplish this by opening the castle's doors, which are actually different ways into his soul.

The woman in Schönberg's Erwartung (Expectation) wanders in a forest. She is driven by jealousy and is searching for her beloved. Suddenly she thinks she sees him dead. Who has murdered him? Did she do it herself? Or was it all a dream?

Director David Radok takes on these two works, which will be linked to one another as a whole piece. Set designer is Martin Chocholoušek (Turandot). Duke Bluebeard is interpreted by house bass Anders Lorentzson, while Katarina Giotas is returning as his Judith. As the woman in Erwartung, Katarina Karnéus has perhaps her greatest challenge to date.
