Libretto: EM Forster and Eric Crozier
Swedish premiere. In the original version, Billy Budd takes place on a ship at sea. In this production, the male-dominated power struggle is relocated to a British boarding school setting and all that this entails. Billy is young, beautiful and vulnerable. He is portrayed by the international opera star Peter Mattei. The substantial cast also includes Lars Cleveman, Clive Bayley and Mats Persson. The production comes from Oper Frankfurt.

Orfeo ed Euridice
Opera in one act by Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714-1787)
Libretto: Raniero de Calzabigi
We are presenting Gluck for the very first time. The myth tells of Orpheo, who will bring back his beloved Euridice from Hades - if he can take her back to the world of the living without turning around and looking at her. Gluck, who reformed the opera, will have a tricentennial celebration in 2014 and we take this opportunity to set up the rarely played Parma version, here with Katarina Karnéus and Kerstin Avemo in the title roles.

La Juive
Opera in five acts by Fromental Halévy (1799-1862). Libretto: Eugène Scribe
Very demanding for the singers. The romantic and dramatic music in La Juive requires excellent singers, and the main female role of Rachel is played by the French soprano Mireille Delunsch. She portrays the Jewess who falls in love with a Christian prince and the story is full of love and oppression. The production comes from the Lithuanian National Opera and in the other roles we also see Lars Cleveman and Ida Falk Winland.

L’elisir d’amore (The Elixir of Love)

Performed in Swedish. What happens when two strangers come to a small peasant community? And when the young peasant falls in love with the worldly young woman? This love comedy offers plenty of laughter and exquisite music in a circus setting. Stina Ancker directs and the main roles are played by Elin Rombo and Daniel Johansson.

Mikael Samuelson and Hans Josefsson play the main roles as Zaza and Georges.

Out of Mind

For the very first time in Sweden. Richard Siegal is an American choreographer who creates a meeting of dance and design, visual arts, architecture, music and literature. He often involves the audience. Hiroaki Umeda, from Japan, is a choreographer, dancer, photographer and video artist with very visual pieces. Both of these choreographers are visiting Sweden for the first time and have each created their respective work for GöteborgsOperans Danskompani.

Spirit

Two masters have created new pieces. A dance by Belgian multimedia artist Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui can contain everything from deep spirituality to comedy. What interests him most is what happens between the dancers. Saburo Teshigawara is one of the world's most prominent choreographers. Everything he creates is aesthetic, beautiful and austere - but also spiritual and subtle. The music in Metamorphosis consists of newly composed electronic music and a capella choir vocals. Both pieces have been newly created for the GöteborgsOperans Danskompani.
