Libretto: Jaroslav Kvapil Conductor: Olaf Henzold
Direction: David Radok
Premiere 22 September 2012
Premiere 22 september 2012
Dvořák's Rusalka, with its many interpretations of nature and mysticism, has been a much-requested work that we will now perform for the first time in Gothenburg. The libretto is based on H.C. Andersen's The Little Mermaid. We get to experience a visually vertiginous journey, a musical idiom from the Late Romantic period and Dvořák's masterly ability to write for orchestras. The soprano, Elisabet Strid, has played Rusalka on many world stages and now performs her first role at The Göteborg Opera. The Austrian tenor Nikolai Schukoff creates the role of the prince and as the witch we see Susanne Resmark.

Puccini's Turandot, with its approximately two hundred participants, was acclaimed by critics and public alike and became a great success when it was performed in 2006. The opera has its point of departure in a Chinese saga in which only he who can guess the three riddles of the Princess Turandot may marry her. Whoever guesses wrong is beheaded. Turandot is sung by the Italian soprano, Francesca Patanè, the part of Prince Calaf is sung by Tomas Lind and the slave girl Liù is sung by the Swedish soprano, Charlotta Larsson.

Simon Boccanegra
OPERA in prologue and three acts by Giuseppe Verdi Libretto: Francesco Maria Piave & Arrigo Boito
Conductor: Giancarlo Andretta
Direction: Claus Guth
Premiere 6 April 2013
In Simon Boccanegra Verdi illustrates power, its premises and how it is possible to be a good and just person in power in spite of battles and intrigues all around. Strong autobiographic threads run through the work, for example Verdi's grief over having lost his wife and child. This successful production from the Hamburg Opera is directed by Claus Guth. The title role is sung by Anders Larsson and as his daughter Amelia we see Malin Byström.

The barber of Seville
OPERA in three acts by Gioacchino Rossini
Libretto: Cesare Sterbini Conductor: Olof Boman
Direction: David Radok
Revival premiere 27 april 2013
In April The Barber of Seville will return to The Göteborg Opera for the fourth time. David Radok's much appreciated performance is full of humour, clever tricks, false disguises and a men's choir unusually fond of dancing. The story is about the barber Figaro who helps his friend the Count Almaviva to get his Rosina, in spite of her guardian wishing to keep her for himself. Everything happens at a high speed to the sparkling music of Rossini. In the role of the clever barber we meet Åke Zetterström; Rosina is sung by Ida Falk Winland and our own Markus Schwartz sings the guardian Doctor Bartolo.
